The great state Akwa Ibom was created on the 23rd of September 1987 by the then Military Administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. The creation of the State brought to fruition years of prolonged struggle by the people that occupied the mainland part of the former Cross River State.

The people of Akwa Ibom State are culturally homogeneous with a common identity and are reputed to be the first settlers in the present day South Eastern Nigeria. The three major dialectal groups are Ibibio, Annang and Oron. Other subgroups include Eket, Ibeno, Itu Mbonuso and the Andonis. English is the language of government and business.
September 23 is a very important day for the people of Akwa Ibom as it marks the day the state was created. Over the years, the people of Akwa Ibom state have celebrated their anniversary in grand style.
The 30th anniversary was one arguably the biggest of all anniversaries, it was hashtagged Orange September.
The 30th anniversary or popularly known as Orange September was a series of events planned to position the state by showcasing the diverse and enigmatic colours of her collective history, unity in diversity and the depth and range of the state indigenous entrepreneurship.

This year’s anniversary is different as they won’t be a series of events taking place.
Everyone in Akwa Ibom is aware of the slogan Orange September, orange is the official colour of the state and September is by far the most important month for the great people of Akwa Ibom.
As the 23rd of September looms, the great people of Akwa Ibom will be coming together to mark their 31st anniversary which will take place at the Uyo Sports Stadium, by 10 am.
In preparation for this great event, lots of Akwa Ibom indigenes have colored themselves Orange, have you colored yourself Orange?
